I long held the opinion that beer wasn't that good. After having a Guinness Draught the other night, I would like to redact that opinion. I have found I like darker beers as opposed to light beers like Hoegaarden. Also, Only 24 more days till I can legally drink! I'll finally not have to bum alcohol off older friends! Also, it will make buying my dad birthday presents a whole hell of a lot easier!

You have to try some strong european beers then, especially trappist beers if you can find one. I especially recommend the Trappiste Rochefort (from Belgium) and La Trappe (from the Netherlands), both in their strongest flavour (that would be around 11% of alcohol)

There is a vast, vast ocean of bad beer out there. It's easy for someone to grow up thinking all beer sucks, especially if they aren't exposed to real beer. Real beer is a wonderfully complex world that almost any doubter can find their niche within. Darker beers are great! You may find you like hops or a particular brew style in particular. Fun fact! Guinness adds a small amount of a sour beer brewed from the same yeast strain and recipe for hundreds of years to each batch, so that Guinness can never be exactly replicated. See? You're a fan of sour beers too and didn't even know!

I had some sort of Chilean Chocolate beer from the Triangle Wine Co. in NC and it was some of the best booze I've ever tasted. Also, 91 days until I can legally drink!

I agree. Still can't legally drink, and don't actually drink at all. But I know that the mainstream light beers taste like shit.

Glad you cnanged your opinion! Beer is great. A Guiness on draught is one of life's greatest things.
Beer is an acquired tasted but you'll learn to love the differences in beers as you try many more of them. Once you turn 21, I suggest buying a six pack of a different beer every week. It sounds ridiculous, but that way you can figure out what you do and don't like.

I've been a Guinness drinker for many moons (I'm 35 so have been drinking it for about 21 years) and I love the stuff. I drink pale ales too such as Old Speckled Hen and the like.
Light ales have a place but they are few and far between in finding one that's right for me.
Light beers and lagers are generally just crap.
Glad you've come over to the dark side, good things come to those who wait.

If you do like I did, you'll need a new liver by 21, and all the good stuff about drinking goes away (i.e. breaking the law). For a year or two. Then you get a real job and become an alcoholic again, only with better booze. Just wait until you can have Guinness from the tap. It's so much better when they pull a lever to give it to you than in the little bottle. But that little bullet in there is pretty neat.

Welcome to the dark side! I too definitely prefer the darker beers. Love my porters and stouts. Oh, and there is such a thing as Guinness Extra Stout, much better than the draught in my opinion.

Try the Guinness Black Lager. It addresses all my complaints with regular Guinness (flat beermilk).

First off, actual draft beer is 10x better than bottled.
2nd, the best beer I've ever had is Spotted Cow, but you can only get it in Wisconsin.
3rd, I love Guiness like it was essential for live.
That's all. Cheers!

Interesting; I've always held that Guinness is actually a terrible beer. To start with, people say that it's a meal in a can - but it actually has a lower calorie content than any of the standard "light beers." The same goes for alcohol content, which is ironic considering that the call it a stout. Stouts and Porters are very similar beer styles; the stout came about as a stronger, higher alcohol Porter. Guinness, I believe, is a 4.2%er. On top of it all, it's utterly bland, and their quality control is sometimes lacking.
Really, a lot of the love that Guinness gets is a result of decades of great marketing, the inexplicable tendency towards group think and wanting to be cool like everyone else, and the power of simply wanting something to be.
If you like darker beers, try a good solid Porter. The Port City Porter is a fantastic choice, as is the Allagash Black. Both are amongst the best Porters on the market today. If you like things that are yeasty and malty, just about any Irish Red will have you covered. The Great Lakes Conway is by far one of my favorites in that genre. Usually only a March beer, you should still be able to find it around.
Also try a good solid schwarzbier; it'll change your impression of what a dark beer is. Most people think that a dark beer is necessarily a heavy-bodied, yeasty thing, but that's just not the case. Many, in fact, are dark lagers or ales that have a great deal of depth and complexity, but are as light-bodied and easy to drink as a budweiser.
And, finally, don't count out lighter-colored beers too quickly, either. If you like the depth and flavor found in darker beers, you'll find plenty of the same in wheats, saisons, and tripels. And you're right in the season for them. For reference, try the Boulevard Brewing Tank 7 (a saison), the Ommegang Witte, and the Victory Brewing Company Golden Monkey.

This... I agree with this. Also, check out the Creme Bruele Stout from Southern Tier brewing. Not only is it good on its own, it makes the best beer float you'll ever have.

If Louisiana has Publix's, they have that too. I have no recommendations though, because I've got another 5 months until I'm 21. Fuck. I just realized I haven't had any alcohol in over a year.

Guinness' role is to be the beer that people who like beer like before they actually try something good.
